Large Group Psychotherapy Model with the Chronic Schizophrenia Who use Social Rehabilitation Facility

Abstract
Objectives£ºThe large group psychotherapy with the chronic schizophrenia is an effective, expedient therapeutic modality that makes patients maintain medication, exchanges their information, improves their symptoms, helps patients resolve emotional conflict, and corrects their maladaptive interpersonal problem. The author have developed and performed ¡®large group psychotherapy model¡¯ for the chronic schizophrenia which has not been performed in Korea, that is based on my clinical experiences and researches for a long time, and that is directly related to previous study on long-term outpatient group psychotherapy with the chronically mentally ill. This model was developed to be compatible for characteristics of the chronic schizophrenia who use Social Rehabilitation Facility and for the related clinical environment.

Methods£ºThis study was performed on the subject to the chronic schizophrenia who used Social Rehabilitation Facility in Seodaemungu-the author has been worked for as a consulting psychiatrist-from April 2001 to September 2001. The 13 therapeutic factors scale was filled out by participants just after each session and the self-report total assessment questionnaire was performed at the time of study termination and patient termination.

Results£ºThe ranks of 13 therapeutic factors scale are as follows : in all patients, the upper ranks of therapeutic factors were catharsis, existential factor, identification with therapist, socializing technique, instillation of hope, and altruism in order. The total assessment questionnaire about group psychotherapy reported that the 82% of subjects (patients) were helped, the 77% of subjects (patients) had an idea to recommend this program to other patients actively, and the 77% of subjects (patients) had an opinion to re-attend in this program if given for them.

Conclusions£ºThe large group psychotherapy would be applicable effectively to the treatment and rehabilitation with the chronic schizophrenia as a economic, efficient therapeutic modality. It is much more effective for therapist to perceive in detail the therapeutic factors when he practices the group psychotherapy.
